- Regional extension centers will help evaluate your health IT needs by assisting in vendor selection and contract conciliation. They will focus on helping you select the highest value EMR option.
- The CMS has appointed regional extension centers to offer support, guidance, and information about becoming Meaningful Users of EHRs. Once you receive your Meaningful Use incentive payment, it may completely cover the cost of implementing an EMR. (Remember, the deadline to start reporting is Oct 3 for 2012).
- Regional extension centers can provide advice about best security and privacy practices: this includes issues such as “implementation and maintenance of physical and network security, user-based access controls, disaster recovery, encryption and storage of backup media, human resources training and policies; and identification of state laws and regulatory requirements that impact privacy and security policies for electronic interoperable health information exchange.”
As you can see, you REC can be an invaluable source of knowledge. To locate the nearest regional extension centers in your state, please visit this HHS website. We hope you will utilize your local REC and SOAPware in order to reap the maximum benefits of an EMR in your practice!
